Garlic Breadsticks

An easy garlic bread stick recipe that goes with practically every dish

Ingredients
  

  • 2 ¼ tsp dry active yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water divided
  • 4 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp butter softened
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp salt

Topping:

  • 3 tbsp butter melted
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp oregano

Instructions
 

  • Place ¼ cup warm water in a small bowl, add the yeast and stir. Allow to sit for a few minutes to get foamy.
  • In a mixing bowl, add sugar, butter, salt, 4 cups of flour. the remaining water and the yeast mixture.
  • Mix until a sticky dough forms. Add some additional flour (about ¼ cup) and mix until a smooth dough forms.
  • Place on floured surface and divide dough in half. Form 2 foot long sections of dough.
  • Cut each log of dough into 6 pieces. Roll each piece into about a 7 inch breadstick. You will have 12 breadsticks.
  • Place breadsticks onto a parchment lined baking sheet, 1-1 ½ inches apart, cover with a cloth or plastic wrap and allow to rise for 45 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 400°
  • Make the topping and brush the breadsticks with half the mixture.
  • Bake until golden brown, about 12-15 minutes or so.
  • Remove from the oven and brush with remaining topping.

Notes

I like to double the garlic in my topping.
You can also add some onion powder and/or parsley to the topping.
If using a salted butter, omit the salt from the topping recipe.
